The GSi Compact DeLuxe is a component modeling emulation of the iconic Farfisa Compact DeLuxe organ.

INSTRUMENT BACKGROUND

Within the realm of vintage transistor organs, also known as "Combo Organs," the Farfisa Compact DeLuxe, alongside its larger counterpart the Compact Duo, stood out as a prominent choice in the European beat scene of the early to mid-1970s. Unlike tonewheel models like the Hammond and the Pari, these organs utilized a relatively straightforward electronic circuit known as the "Top Octave Synthesizer" (TOS). This unique circuitry generated 12 distinct waveforms, each corresponding to a note in the top octave of the organ keyboard. The resulting sound was a blend of ramp and triangular waveforms. Lower octaves were created through frequency division circuits that halved the waveforms, repeating this process down to the pedalboard tones. This method ensured that notes of the same pitch across different octaves were perfectly synchronized, imparting a harmonious quality to the sound.

Combo organs achieved their varied tonal registers by passing these raw waveforms through a filter bank: low-pass filters for bass tones, high-pass filters for violin-like sounds, and multi-filtered configurations for additional effects. The interaction between waveforms from different registers produced subtle phase shifts, contributing to the distinct character of these instruments.

The sound engine featured in the GSi Compact DeLuxe is also utilized in GSi Gemini and Crumar Mojo 61 keyboards.
